Court Warns Army Could Arrest IGP Over SARS Abduction Defiance

    Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun

A Federal High Court judge in Abuja has threatened to order the Chief of Army Staff to arrest Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun for alleged disobedience of court orders in the eight-year disappearance of John Anozie.

Justice Binta Nyako issued the warning during contempt proceedings by Nnenna Anozie, whose husband was abducted from their Lekki, Lagos home on June 15, 2017, by Awkuzu SARS operatives—Anthony Obiozor Ikechukwu, Uzochukwu Emeana, John Eze (aka T Boy), and Sunday Okpe—who seized vehicles, cash, passports, and documents.

In September 2025, Nyako ordered the IGP to produce the officers and case files; non-compliance prompted Forms 48 and 49 for contempt, seeking his committal to Kuje prison.

Mrs Anozie’s counsel, Vincent Adodo, cited repeated defiance despite evidence; IGP’s lawyer, Stanley Nwodo, claimed officer identity confusion, which Nyako rejected.

“If I must commit him, I will ask the Army Chief to arrest him—not police,” Nyako said, proposing an in-chambers meeting or full contempt hearing.

Parties agreed to the meeting; case adjourned to April 23 pending outcome and possible Attorney General referral.

    Anozie’s case echoes #EndSARS abuses—extortion, torture, disappearances—sparking 2020 protests and judicial panels.
