Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in the sum of ₦200 million over alleged cybercrime charges.
Justice Mohammed Umar, who delivered the ruling on Tuesday, admitted the defendant to bail subject to the fulfilment of specified conditions.
The judge ordered Sowore to produce two sureties.
According to the court, one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the second surety must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
Justice Umar also directed that the sureties be verified by the prosecution before the bail conditions could be perfected.
In addition, the court ordered the defendant to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court pending the determination of the case.
Following the ruling, the judge released Sowore to his legal team and adjourned the matter until July 6 for the commencement of the defence.
Sowore is standing trial on allegations bordering on cybercrime, which he has denied.
