Arsenal have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Newcastle United for the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in a deal valued at £77 million plus performance-related bonuses.
French sports daily L’Equipe reported that the two Premier League clubs have agreed on the broad terms of the transfer, although the necessary documents are yet to be signed.
The report said the deal is now at an advanced stage, with only the final formalities remaining before the transfer can be completed.
Newcastle had initially been unwilling to sell their captain after already losing several key players during the summer transfer window, including Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon.
However, Arsenal are said to have intensified negotiations in recent days to secure the services of the 28-year-old Brazil international.
Guimaraes reportedly informed Newcastle’s hierarchy several weeks ago of his intention to leave St. James’ Park and did not travel with the club’s squad for its pre-season training camp in La Manga on Friday, further fuelling speculation over his imminent departure.
If completed, the transfer would mark another significant change for Newcastle following the recent departure of manager Eddie Howe, a development that has disappointed many supporters.
The move would also benefit French club Lyon, Guimaraes’ former team, which is expected to receive more than €8 million through a sell-on clause included in the midfielder’s previous transfer agreement.
Neither Arsenal nor Newcastle United has officially confirmed the transfer.
