Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) has held its 22nd Graduation Ceremony, conferring degrees on 572 students across doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s programmes in a landmark event that underscores the institution’s growing contribution to Ghana’s higher education landscape.
The ceremony saw 8 PhD, 69 master’s, and 495 bachelor’s graduates receive their degrees. The bachelor’s graduates comprised 405 from AIT’s campus-based programmes and 90 from its Open University programmes.
PhD Alumni Surpass 100: A Significant Milestone
A key highlight of the ceremony was the graduation of eight new PhD scholars, taking AIT’s cumulative number of PhD graduates to over 100. The university has now graduated doctoral scholars for the 14th time.
AIT President, Prof. Clement K. Dzidonu, described the achievement as a significant milestone for the relatively young university and noted that more than half of AIT’s PhD graduates have attained professorial rank within three years of graduating.
AIT’s impact is also increasingly evident across Ghana’s higher education sector. According to Prof. Dzidonu, faculty members of most public and private universities in Ghana include PhD graduates of AIT, while academic and senior administrative staff from almost all public and private universities have undertaken doctoral studies at the institution.
Strengthening Ghana’s Human Capital
The university’s postgraduate research programmes span Engineering, Information Technology, Education, and Business Administration, supporting AIT’s commitment to research, innovation, and Ghana’s science, technology, and innovation agenda.
At the undergraduate level, the 22nd Graduation added 495 new bachelor’s graduates to the AIT alumni community, alongside 69 master’s graduates, further strengthening the pool of skilled professionals entering Ghana’s workforce.
The graduation therefore marks more than an annual academic milestone. It reflects AIT’s growing contribution to Ghana’s human capital development, postgraduate research, and the strengthening of teaching and academic leadership across the country’s university system.
AIT Chairman Hails University’s Progress
Chairman of the AIT Board of Trustees, Emeritus Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah, commended the university for meeting important milestones despite its relatively young age, saying AIT is “fast becoming a world-class private technological university.”
He also congratulated the graduating class, reminding them that graduation is only the beginning, and that their ultimate success would depend on how effectively they use the knowledge and opportunities gained from their education.
Graduates Challenged to Embrace Lifelong Learning
Addressing the graduating class, Prof. Dzidonu urged them to embrace continuous learning in a rapidly changing world shaped by Artificial Intelligence and emerging technologies. His message was centred on the concept of the “Sovereign Lifelong Learner”—graduates who take ownership of continually developing their skills, knowledge, and professional capabilities.
He challenged the Class of 2026 to “See the Opportunity, Explore the Possibility and Create the Difference,” urging them to use their education not only to build careers but also to create value and contribute meaningfully to society.
Accreditation and Affiliations
AIT is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to offer both campus-based and Open University undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. The university is affiliated with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for campus-based undergraduate programmes in engineering, computer science/IT, and business administration, and with the Open University of Malaysia for Open University undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the Masters and PhD levels.
