Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman provided an assist as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday.
Lookman, who came on in the 71st minute, combined with fellow substitute Jonathan David for Atletico’s second goal in the 79th minute at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano in Madrid.
The goal came six minutes after Manchester United defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review for a challenge on David that was judged to have denied a goalscoring opportunity.
David finished Lookman’s pass to double Atletico’s advantage and secure the victory for the Spanish side.
Atletico had taken the lead in the opening minute through Pablo Barrios, who scored after the hosts capitalised on a defensive lapse by Manchester United.
Manchester United had opportunities to respond, with the visitors creating chances through Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford, but they failed to convert them.
Atletico also had a second goal ruled out by VAR before half-time. Johnny Cardoso’s effort in the 44th minute was disallowed following a review for a possible handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up.
Lookman’s contribution came after Atletico manager Diego Simeone introduced him alongside Hjulmand in the 71st minute as the hosts sought to maintain their advantage.
The result gave Atletico a victory in the second round of the Champions League league phase, while Manchester United were left to contend with the defeat and Yoro’s dismissal.
Atletico had lost their opening Champions League match 2-1 away to Liverpool, while Manchester United began their campaign with a 4-0 victory over Sabah FK.
