UCL: UEFA to Honour Nepal Flood Victims Before Matches

European football’s governing body, UEFA, will honour victims of the devastating flash floods that struck Nepal on August 26, 2026, before all UEFA Champions League matches scheduled for this week.

According to a statement published on UEFA’s website on Monday, players and officials will observe a minute of silence before each match, while a banner carrying a message of solidarity will also be displayed.

The banner will read: “You are not alone Nepal.”

UEFA said the tribute was aimed at expressing solidarity with those affected by the disaster and supporting the country’s recovery efforts.

    UEFA President Offers Condolences

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said the European football community would stand alongside victims and their families during the period of mourning.

“The entire European football family will stand together before this week’s matches to express our deepest condolences and our support to the people of Nepal,” Čeferin said.

“We wish them strength and resilience as they continue to recover from this tragedy and its aftermath.”

The tribute will take place before all Champions League matches scheduled for the week.

    Champions League League Phase Begins

The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 8, with 36 teams starting their campaigns under the competition’s single-league format.

The clubs will play 144 matches across eight matchdays, with their final positions determining their routes into the knockout stages.

The Champions League final is scheduled to take place in Madrid on June 5, 2027.

    Nepal Observes National Mourning

Nepal declared a national day of mourning on Monday for victims of the devastating floods, as families continued to await news of missing hydropower workers feared to be trapped in tunnels.

The disaster, which followed a glacial and mountain collapse along the China-Nepal border, reportedly killed at least 1,398 people, while more than 5,500 others remained missing, including about 800 foreigners.

Flags were flown at half-mast across the country, while candlelight vigils were planned as Nepal continued its mourning and recovery efforts.
