Unidentified gunmen on Sunday shot dead two persons, including comedian and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Aiza”, at separate locations in Awka, Anambra.
The incident occurred on Aug. 30 at S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, and Capital City Road, Amaenyi, in the state capital.
Some residents and eyewitnesses who spoke on the incident suspected that the attacks might be cult-related.
An eyewitness near the scene of Nwosu’s killing said the assailants, numbering about three, trailed the comedian from his residence in a tinted vehicle before double-crossing his vehicle and shooting him.
The eyewitness alleged that the assailants subsequently drove some distance away and shot another man by the roadside before dispossessing him of his belongings.
The source added that the assailants fired several shots into the air before fleeing the area, causing panic among residents.
The spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.
Tochukwu said the command had commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killings.
“The Anambra State Police Command has condemned in the strongest terms the gunshot attacks carried out by unidentified gunmen in Awka, the State capital, on Sunday, 30th August 2026, which resulted in the deaths of two persons,” he said.
According to him, preliminary information indicated that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla shot two persons at separate locations within Awka.
He said police operatives, upon receiving distress calls, immediately mobilised patrol teams to the affected areas and commenced efforts to track down the assailants.
“Upon arrival at the scenes, the operatives recovered the bodies of the victims along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo, Awka, respectively.
“The victims were taken to a hospital, where they were subsequently confirmed dead by medical personnel,” he said.
The police spokesperson said one of the victims was yet to be identified, while the second was identified as Isaac Nwosu, also known as “Azia”.
He added that operatives recovered N7,550, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes.
Tochukwu said the Commissioner of Police in Anambra, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, had directed the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for discreet and comprehensive investigation.
He said security operatives had also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining areas.
The police urged community leaders, residents, motorists, business owners and others who might have witnessed the incidents or had credible information on the suspects, their movements or the vehicle used in the attacks to come forward.
The command assured members of the public that such information would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
“The Anambra State Police Command reiterates that community partnership remains critical to effective policing and urges residents not to hesitate to provide timely information that could assist in apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks,” he said.
