The Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Sen. Shuaibu Afolabi Salisu, says the National Assembly is revising Nigeria’s cybercrime legislation to address rising insecurity and technology-driven offences across the country.

Salisu, who represents Ogun Central Senatorial District, disclosed this in Abeokuta while speaking with journalists shortly after the induction of new members and investiture of executives of the Abeokuta Sports Club 1904, led by its President, Alhaji Taoheed Awodele.
He said the Senate was set to repeal the existing National Cybercrime Act and promulgate a new cybersecurity law, noting that the current legislation had become outdated in view of advancements in technology, the rise of Artificial Intelligence, and new forms of cybercrime.
“As I speak with you, we are reworking a new National Cybersecurity Law. We are going to repeal the existing law and promulgate a new one.
“Since the last law was enacted, we have witnessed advancements in technology, the rise of Artificial Intelligence, and new forms of cybercrime.
“There is also a new UN Convention on Cyber Crimes. So, a new cybersecurity law is coming into play,” Salisu said.
The lawmaker stressed the critical role of technology in crime prevention, adding that broadband expansion was essential to secure ungoverned spaces across Nigeria.
He explained that the Senate had already held consultations in the South West on insecurity and would extend similar engagements to other geopolitical zones.
Salisu also urged social organisations such as the Abeokuta Sports Club to contribute to leadership recruitment and civic guidance, describing them as repositories of knowledge that could help policymakers refine public policy.
In her remarks, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako Oyedele, charged the new leadership of the club to pursue impact, progress, and harmony, stressing that leadership was about “leaving things better than you met them.”
Awodele, the new President of the club, pledged to lead with integrity and transparency, announcing plans to construct modern swimming pools, complete the tennis house, upgrade the soccer pitch and gallery, and execute other infrastructure projects during his tenure.
