Nigeria’s fashion scene is experiencing a vibrant cultural revival, according to new Google Search data released ahead of Lagos Fashion Week, which kicks off on October 29.

The report highlights a surge in interest for vintage styles and traditional attire, reflecting a generation’s desire to blend global nostalgia with local heritage.

Searches for vintage clothing rose by 90 percent between August and September 2025 compared to the previous year, with standout items including zoot suits (+310%), tube tops (+140%), and bell-bottoms (+60%).

Olumide Balogun, Director for West Africa at Google, said the trends show “a generation that is simultaneously embracing global nostalgia and celebrating local heritage.”

Searches for traditional Nigerian outfits also spiked, with “Traditional outfit of Igbo,” “Nupe outfit,” and “Etibo outfit” among the top queries.

Nigerians are also exploring modern styling techniques, with popular “how to style” searches including “Scarf on bubu gown,” “Jacket with a gown,” and “Sweatshirts with skirts.”

Footwear trends are equally bold, with slingback shoes seeing a 110 percent increase in search interest. Queries such as “yellow slingback heels” and “rosegold slingback heels” suggest a growing appetite for statement accessories.

Other breakout fashion items include jorts, nightshirts (+180%), kilts (+80%), and negligees (+70%), indicating a playful and expressive approach to style.

Lagos Fashion Week is expected to showcase this dynamic blend of tradition and innovation, as designers and fashion lovers converge to celebrate Nigeria’s evolving sartorial identity.
