NAFDAC Warns Nigerians About Circulation of Unregistered Skin-Lightening Soap for Children

National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned Nigerians about the circulation of an unregistered cosmetic product, Fair Child Soap, which is reportedly being marketed for children.

In a statement released by the agency, NAFDAC disclosed that its routine post-market surveillance uncovered the sale of the imported skin-lightening soap across various retail outlets in Lagos. The product, which is promoted using misleading labeling, is not registered with NAFDAC and poses potential health risks.

During a consultative meeting with the company responsible for distribution, Lexmart Cosmetics Ltd, it was confirmed that the product was imported with intentions for local manufacturing. Consequently, the company has been sanctioned and ordered to halt further distribution, as the soap does not meet regulatory approval in Nigeria.

NAFDAC expressed concerns over the safety implications of such skin-lightening products, especially for children. The agency warned that prolonged use could result in skin sensitivity, exposure to banned substances, and long-term dermatological complications.

Healthcare professionals and consumers have been advised to report any sightings of Fair Child Soap or other unregistered cosmetic products to the nearest NAFDAC office. They can also call the agency’s hotline at 0800-162-3322 or email complaints to [email protected].
