NAFDAC issues public alert on Caro White skin lightening beauty lotion

    NAFDAC

National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public notification following the recall of Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion by the European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX). The recall is due to the product’s non-compliance with the Cosmetic Products Regulation because it contains a high concentration of Kojic Acid, exceeding the allowable maximum concentration of one percent.

The EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) identified that the excessive Kojic Acid in Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion poses potential endocrine-disrupting risks. The average cost of Caro White skin-lightening lotion in Nigeria is approximately N8000. However, the product is not listed in the NAFDAC database.

NAFDAC has advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and verify the authenticity and physical condition of the product. Healthcare professionals and consumers are encouraged to report any adverse events related to the use of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office. Reports can also be submitted via email at [email protected], through the E-reporting platforms available at www.nafdac.gov.ng, or via the Med-safety application.

In addition to the concerns over Kojic Acid, an analysis on July 7, 2023, by five UK stores found that Caro White Intensive Care Lightening Beauty Cream sold via eBay posed a significant chemical risk. The cream contained 422mg/kg (0.042% w/w) of clobetasol propionate, a substance prohibited in cosmetic products, and hydroquinone, another banned ingredient that was not listed on the packaging. Furthermore, the product lacked proper labeling and markings.

As a result of these hazardous findings, corrective actions were taken, and eBay promptly removed the listing from its marketplace. Consumers who own the products have been strongly advised to discontinue their use immediately.
