NCC Calls for Concerted Efforts to Achieve Deployment of 5G in Nigeria

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said that the rollout of the Fifth Generation (5G) network in the country will require more infrastructure for the service to reach all parts of the country.

Professor Umar Garba Danbatta, executive vice chairman and chief executive officer (EVC/CEO) of NCC has therefore called for concerted efforts and unwavering commitment of all stakeholders for the nation to achieve steady, timely and accurate deployment of 5G services “because of its benefits to individuals, businesses and the growth of the country”.

Prof. Danbatta stated this during an in-house interview which took place at the Commission’s Head Office in Abuja recently.

The federal government had through the ministry of communication and digital economy, last Thursday formally handed over the 3.5HZ spectrum of the 5G network to the NCC.

In December 2021, Mafab Communication and MTN Nigeria emerged the two successful winners of the 3.5gigahertz (GHz) spectrum auction for the deployment of 5G technology.

The winners emerged after 11 rounds of bidding that lasted for eight hours. The NCC fixed the base price at $197.4 million, and the two winners got the nod of the regulator at $273 million.
