The Yoruba film industry has suffered another painful loss following the death of actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, who died after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
Kareem’s death was announced on Tuesday by the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), through its Executive Governor, Owolabi Ajasa.
Before her death, the actress had publicly appealed for financial assistance to enable her continue treatment, revealing that the cost of battling the disease had placed a significant financial burden on her family.
In a video released alongside the appeal, Kareem disclosed that she had been receiving treatment for breast cancer for some time and that her family had spent substantial amounts of money on her care.
“I’m a breast cancer patient. It has been going on for a while. My family has spent a lot of money; I’ve come to seek help. The association I belong to, TAMPAN, has tried too, but it’s not enough,” she said.
The actress also appealed to Nigerians to support her treatment, stressing that she had two young children.
“Don’t allow me to die this way; I have two young children. Nigerians, please help me with any amount you can use to help,” she pleaded.
Confirming her death, TAMPAN Ogun State expressed appreciation to individuals who contributed financially, offered prayers and provided encouragement to Kareem and her family during her illness.
In a statement signed by the association’s Public Relations Officer, Femi Solaja, on behalf of Ajasa, TAMPAN said the support received during Kareem’s treatment meant a great deal to her family and colleagues.
The association, however, said Kareem eventually succumbed to the illness despite efforts to assist her treatment.
“Sadly, despite all our efforts and prayers, Atinuke has passed on and answered the final call,” the statement said.
TAMPAN condoled with Kareem’s family, colleagues and loved ones, praying that they would find strength to cope with the loss.
The actress’ death comes at a difficult period for the Yoruba movie industry, which is still mourning the recent passing of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, who reportedly died after battling stage-four cancer.
