Union Bank Nigeria Secures PCI DSS v4.0.1 Certification, Strengthens Payment Card Security

Union Bank of Nigeria has attained certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, effective Aug. 11, 2026.

PCI DSS is a global standard that sets technical and operational requirements for protecting payment card account data stored, processed or transmitted by organisations.

The certification confirms that Union Bank’s payment card environments meet the required security controls for safeguarding customers’ credit and debit card information.

According to the bank, the assessment covered key areas of its operations, including network infrastructure, card issuance, Automated Teller Machine (ATM) and Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction acquiring and payment processing.

It also covered reconciliation, settlement, chargeback, dispute resolution and retail banking operations.

Union Bank said it was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category.

The certification followed a year-long engagement involving quarterly assessments and the participation of departmental, business and functional heads across the bank.

The exercise was conducted in partnership with security firm Digital Encode, while the final independent audit was carried out by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor.

Speaking on the development, Yetunde B. Oni, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Union Bank, said protecting customers’ information remained central to the bank’s operations.

“The security of our customers’ information is central to everything we do at Union Bank.

“This certification reaffirms that our payment systems and processes meet a rigorous global standard, and it reflects the discipline of colleagues across the Bank who work every day to keep customer data safe,” Oni said.

The bank said the renewal also ensures continuity of its PCI DSS certification.

It added that maintaining uninterrupted certification was consistent with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for banks to sustain continuous compliance without a gap.

The PCI DSS v4.0.1 certification is expected to strengthen Union Bank’s payment security framework and reinforce customer confidence in the protection of payment card data.
