Uber Is Leaving Nigeria After 12 Years – Here’s Why the Ride-Hailing Giant Is Shutting Down

Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced its decision to wind down operations in Nigeria after 12 years of doing business in the country.

The company, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said its Nigerian operations would cease effective Sept. 2, 2026, following a review of its business.

“After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.

Uber, which commenced operations in Lagos in 2014, thanked Nigerians for welcoming and using its platform over the years.

The company also acknowledged the possible disruption its departure could cause to customers.

It said its Help Centre would remain available until Sept. 23 to assist customers with final account-related enquiries.

Uber’s operations in Nigeria had faced various challenges over the years, including protests by drivers over fares, commission rates and alleged poor treatment.

Similar protests were recorded in 2017, 2023 and 2025.

The company, which commenced global operations in 2009, has now exited 14 countries across Asia and Africa.

Its exit marks the end of its 12-year presence in Nigeria’s ride-hailing market, which has continued to evolve with the emergence of several local and international operators.
