Former US President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to NATO allies, demanding complete unity before imposing major sanctions on Russia. In a letter shared on social media, Trump stated the United States is prepared to enact strong sanctions only when all NATO nations agree and cease purchasing Russian oil.
He criticized some members for continuing to buy Russian oil, saying it weakens NATO’s negotiating power and commitment to winning the conflict. Trump also urged the alliance to impose steep tariffs—between 50% to 100%—on China as part of a broader strategy to pressure both Moscow and Beijing until the war in Ukraine ends.
While the European Union has banned some Russian oil imports, several non-EU NATO members, such as Turkey, still rely heavily on Russian energy. Trump’s aggressive stance has also extended to India, doubling tariffs on imports in response to its Russian oil purchases, a move that has strained US-India relations.
European officials remain cautious, skeptical of weaponizing tariffs—especially against China—amid ongoing trade negotiations. Meanwhile, Russian military provocations continue, including drone incursions into NATO airspace in Romania and Poland, prompting NATO to enhance its eastern defenses.
These developments highlight mounting tensions and risk deepening rifts within NATO at a pivotal time in the Ukraine conflict.
