R&B legend Freddie Jackson dies at 69
R&B singer Freddie Jackson, renowned for hit songs including “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight,” has died aged 69.

The Jackson’s family announced his death in a statement today, October 6, saying the singer “went home to rest last night.”

The family did not disclose the cause of death.

“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson, who went home to rest last night,” the statement said.

The family described Jackson as more than a legendary voice, saying he was a kind and generous person who loved his fans, family, friends and music.

For decades, Jackson was known for romantic R&B and soul ballads that became popular among adult contemporary audiences. His major hits included “Rock Me Tonight,” “You Are My Lady,” “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” “Jam Tonight,” “He’ll Never Love You (Like I Do)” and “Do Me Again.”

Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Harlem, New York, on October 2, 1956, Jackson began his professional career in the late 1970s with the California funk band Mystic Merlin before pursuing a solo career.

His breakthrough came in 1985 with the album Rock Me Tonight, whose title track and “You Are My Lady” both became major R&B hits. The album went platinum, while his follow-up, Just Like the First Time, also achieved platinum status.

Jackson continued recording and performing over the years, releasing albums including Love Signals in 2018 and My First Love in 2023. He also continued to perform live, with concert appearances reported as recently as September 2026.

In 2024, Jackson had publicly revealed that he was battling kidney disease, although his family did not state whether the condition was linked to his death.

Reacting to his death, the family thanked Jackson’s fans for their support throughout his career.

“To everyone who ever sang along, danced, or felt something when Freddie took the stage: thank you. You were family to him, and he carried your love with him always,” the statement said.

The family asked fans to keep his relatives, friends and loved ones in their prayers, adding that details of funeral arrangements and plans to honour his legacy would be announced later.

“Rest in peace, Freddie. Your legacy and your voice will live on forever,” the family said.
