Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has invited social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, to substantiate allegations he made against Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Moshood Jimoh over the handling of a murder investigation.
The Force also confirmed that AIG Jimoh has been invited for questioning as part of its internal administrative review of the allegations.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu.
According to the statement, the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (Force CID), Abuja, invited AIG Jimoh in connection with the claims raised by Otse.
The Force further disclosed that the Force CID, Abuja, had on July 30, 2026, issued a formal invitation to Otse, requesting him to appear before investigators and provide evidence to support the allegations he made publicly.
Otse had alleged that AIG Jimoh manipulated the investigation into the killing of youth leader Sheriff Salami in April 2023 and the death of Ademola Akinloye, son of an Ajiran traditional ruler, in August 2024.
Following the police investigation at the time, businessman Hammed Akanbi was declared wanted, arrested by INTERPOL in the Republic of Benin in April and repatriated to Nigeria to face prosecution.
The activist has challenged the outcome of the investigation, alleging that Akanbi was wrongly implicated and that evidence was manipulated to portray him as the mastermind of the killings.
He also called on AIG Jimoh to produce the original statements of certain suspects, claiming they did not initially implicate Akanbi.
Responding to the allegations, the Police said the criminal case had already been investigated and filed before a court of competent jurisdiction following legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Force stated that because the matter is before the court, it would not engage in public debate or attempt to influence judicial proceedings through media commentary.
It, however, reiterated its commitment to investigating all credible allegations of misconduct through its established disciplinary and oversight mechanisms.
According to the statement, the Nigeria Police Force applies the provisions of the Constitution, the Police Act 2020, Police Regulations and other administrative procedures equally to all officers, irrespective of rank.
The Force emphasised that while Nigerians have the constitutional right to freedom of expression and to demand accountability from public institutions, allegations against police officers must be formally investigated rather than determined through social media campaigns.
It warned that any officer found culpable after investigation would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law, while false and defamatory allegations could attract legal consequences.
The Police urged Otse to honour the invitation extended by the Force CID and cooperate with investigators, while allowing the judicial process in the criminal case to proceed without interference.
It reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, accountability and the impartial administration of justice.
