Fresh questions are being raised regarding the candidacy and campaign finance of Peter Obi, flagbearer of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections.
The major question, is can Peter Obi’s income as a Nigerian businessman, entrepreneur, primarily through private commerce, international trade, corporate management, and banking sustain him in politics?
Aside from the competing claims surrounding Obi’s financial legacy in Anambra state, his involvement in three leading financial institutions: Access Bank; GTB; and Fidelity Bank is under scrutiny.
Just last September, shareholders of Fidelity Bank Plc, raised alarms claiming that Obi is attempting to build a 29.5 percent beneficial interest in the bank through proxies.
Critics allege the accumulation could position Fidelity Bank to politically expose itself or route 2027 presidential election.
Reports also noted that Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), former militant leader allegedly acquired a major stake in Fidelity Bank via off-market transactions in July 2025, adding to control disputes.
Elsewhere, Obi claimed that Intafact Beverages Limited (SABMiller Brewery) in Onitsha—built during his tenure—is also in the eye of the storm.
Even with SABmiller, critics and past investigative reports (such as those by Premium Times) previously questioned the arrangement, alleging conflicts of interest regarding state equity versus private connections tied to Obi’s company, NEXT International Limited.
His critics insist that Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the two primary anti-corruption agencies, should investigate how Obi fuels his political project.
Peter Obi’s media team could not e reached for comments just as the media team of Fidelity Bank could not comment.
