First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to move beyond rhetoric and translate the spirit of the International Day of Charity into practical support for vulnerable people across the country.
In a message marking the 2026 International Day of Charity, the First Lady described charity as more than simply giving, stressing that it involves extending a helping hand, restoring hope and supporting people in need.
She said the occasion should remind Nigerians of the importance of kindness, compassion and generosity in building a more caring and inclusive society.
According to her, even the smallest acts of kindness can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Mrs Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to embrace charitable giving and volunteerism, particularly in support of disadvantaged members of society, saying collective action could help reduce poverty and strengthen communities.
She said, “Through our collective action, we can help reduce poverty, strengthen our communities, and ensure that no one is left behind.”
The First Lady’s message comes as she continues to promote social welfare initiatives, including the zonal rollout of the National Community Food Bank Programme in the South-South region.
The programme is targeted at pregnant women, lactating mothers and children under six.
During a visit to Calabar on Friday, Mrs Tinubu also announced cash support for victims of the Calabar Mall fire as well as women’s groups, highlighting the administration’s efforts to complement charitable messages with direct material assistance.
She called on Nigerians to make compassion and generosity part of everyday life, stressing that supporting vulnerable people remains essential to building stronger and more inclusive communities.
