Olapeju Ibekwe Appointed to Board of UN Global Compact Network Nigeria Ahead of UNGA 80

Olapeju Ibekwe, Chief Executive Officer of Sterling One Foundation, has been appointed to the Board of the United Nations Global Compact Network Nigeria (UNGCNN), highlighting her significant contributions to Africa’s sustainable development agenda.

The announcement was made ahead of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, where Ibekwe is expected to engage with leaders from government, the private sector, and civil society to strengthen partnerships accelerating Africa’s progress toward Agenda 2030.

Her appointment underscores a strong track record in driving sustainable solutions across education, health access, and women and youth empowerment. Under her leadership, Sterling One Foundation has established both global affiliations and local impact, reaching thousands of beneficiaries while influencing policy and partnerships throughout Africa.

Experts emphasize that this appointment arrives at a critical juncture, as only 15% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are currently on track globally. Africa faces an annual financing gap of $200 billion, requiring political will, private sector engagement, and cross-sector collaboration to overcome these challenges.

Ibekwe described her new role as an opportunity to deepen the localization of the SDGs, a cause she has passionately championed. The appointment also strengthens ties with the UN Global Compact Principles and the African Union’s Women and Youth Financial and Economic Inclusion (WYFEI) 2030 initiative, both promoting inclusive growth and responsible private sector participation.

Her leadership role in convenings like the Africa Social Impact Summit (ASIS) highlights her ability to mobilize governments, businesses, and civil society to create partnerships that unlock Africa’s potential. With this board position, Olapeju Ibekwe brings invaluable grassroots experience and continental insights to global discussions, reinforcing the idea that Africa is not merely a recipient of aid but a driver of innovation and sustainable development solutions.

The UN Global Compact Network Nigeria is the local chapter of the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative, which mobilizes businesses and organizations to align their strategies with universal principles and act toward advancing the SDGs.

Olapeju Ibekwe’s appointment is a testament to her impactful leadership and dedication to fostering a sustainable future for Africa through collaboration and innovation.
