National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their strong commitment to online safety and compliance with Nigeria’s Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries.
These platforms have submitted their 2024 Compliance Reports, showcasing significant strides in protecting users from harmful content.
According to the reports, a total of 754,629 user complaints were registered and addressed. Platforms removed 58,909,112 pieces of harmful content, while 420,439 items were reuploaded following successful user appeals.
Additionally, 13,597,057 accounts were closed or deactivated due to violations. These figures reflect the platforms’ proactive enforcement of both Nigeria’s Code of Practice and their own community guidelines.
The Code of Practice—jointly developed by NITDA, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC)—sets clear expectations for platforms operating in Nigeria.
It mandates local registration of large service platforms, compliance with Nigerian laws and tax obligations, and transparent content moderation practices.
While celebrating these achievements, NITDA emphasizes that building a safer digital space is a shared responsibility.
The agency remains committed to working with industry stakeholders, civil society organizations, and regulatory partners to enhance digital literacy, strengthen user protection, and foster trust and transparency across Nigeria’s online platforms.
