Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) says it will partner with Data Protection Compliance Organizations (DPCOs) in training 50,000 young Nigerians who are interested in building careers in data protection privacy ecosystem.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner, NDPC disclosed this recently during a zoom meeting with ICT reporters.
Dr. Olatunji added that the capacity training would be an annual event that will be deployed across the 774 local government areas of the country.
According to him, “Our target is to ensure that we build the capacity of young Nigerians who may be interested in building careers in data protection privacy ecosystem.
“So we’re going to work with Data Protection Compliance Organizations (DPCOs) for the training and national certification body for the certification, In fact what we have in our roadmap is to training 50,000 people per-annum on our own”.
Dr. Olatunji further explained that the commission has licensed over 160 Data Protection Compliance Organisations {DPCOs) that will drive the training and certifications through a bespoke curriculum.
While acknowledging that the data protection ecosystem is still in its emerging state in Nigeria, Dr. Olatunji said the campaign by NDPC will be to ensure that data controllers and processors know their obligations, while data consumers should know their rights.
He further noted that the Commission will embark on capacity building, an ecosystem that will create jobs and be globally competitive.
“There is shortage of Data Processing Officers. Measures are already in place to get them.”
Dr. Olatunji also assured that every section of the data protection law will be broken down to address specific needs in data security and protection to the understanding of every Nigerian, even those at the grassroots, using its collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) as leverage.
Recall that Data Protection Compliance Organizations (DPCO) are entities duly licensed by the Nigeria Data Protection commission (NDPC) for training, auditing, consulting, and rendering services and products for compliance with the NDPC or any foreign Data Protection Law or Regulation having an effect in Nigeria.
