Newcastle United staged a dramatic comeback from two goals down to draw 2–2 with Bournemouth on Saturday, maintaining their unbeaten start to the season despite a turbulent period of change at the club.
Matthias Jaissle’s side fell 2–0 behind by the 35th minute after Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring before an unfortunate own goal from Malick Thiaw doubled Bournemouth’s advantage, with both goals aided by deflections.
Newcastle responded almost immediately through Harvey Barnes, who produced a superb curling finish less than two minutes after Bournemouth’s second goal to give the hosts a lifeline.
Bournemouth remained the more composed side for much of the second half, frustrating Newcastle as the hosts struggled to build sustained attacking momentum.
However, substitute Jacob Ramsey rescued a point for Newcastle in the 88th minute, calmly finishing after Bournemouth failed to clear their lines.
The result means Newcastle remain unbeaten in all competitions this season. They began their Premier League campaign with a 2–2 draw against Liverpool before recording a 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
The club appointed German manager Jaissle last month following the departure of long-serving boss Eddie Howe, who previously managed Bournemouth.
Newcastle have also undergone major changes in their playing squad, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon among the notable departures. The club brought in eight new players during what they described as a “transformational” summer transfer window.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, are also under new management, with Marco Rose replacing Andoni Iraola after the latter’s move to Liverpool.
The visitors made the stronger start at St James’ Park and deservedly took the lead when Alex Scott’s effort deflected into the path of Tavernier, who reacted quickly to poke the ball beyond Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.
Bournemouth doubled their advantage when Justin Kluivert’s long-range effort struck the post and rebounded off Hornicek. Scott’s subsequent cross then struck Thiaw and looped over the goal line.
Newcastle quickly reduced the deficit as Barnes raced down the left, cut inside and curled an excellent effort beyond the reach of Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic.
Jaissle introduced Matias Fernandez-Pardo in the 63rd minute and made further changes as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser.
The pressure eventually paid off when Bournemouth failed to clear a late attack, allowing Ramsey to keep his composure and fire home in the 88th minute.
The comeback secured a valuable point for Newcastle and extended their unbeaten run during a season of significant change.
