    NDLEA Seizes 646kg Hard Drugs, Arrests 60 Suspects in Imo

    The NDLEA Command of the National Drug Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized 646 kg of hard drugs and arrested 60 suspected drug traffickers from January to June 2021.

    This day was reserved by the United Nations General Assembly by resolution 42/112 of December 7, 1987 to awaken the consciousness of nations on the major problems that drug abuse and trafficking represented for society.

    The theme for the year 2021 is: “Sharing facts about drugs, saving lives”. Inam, who thanked Governor Hope Uzodimma for his unwavering support for the agency, insisted on the need to tackle drug trafficking and abuse as a panacea to the security challenges facing the state and the country.

    He listed the drugs seized to include cannabis sativa, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine and tramadol.

    He said the federal government’s special border task force transferred 4,784 kg of cannabis sativa to the command.

    He added that the command obtained eight convictions, advised 47 drug addicts, admitted 15 drug addicts, two of whom were successfully rehabilitated and released while five were dismissed for various reasons.

    He also said that drug education and awareness was carried out in high schools, churches, the Imo State University campus as well as the Nigerian Navy office in Owerrinta.

    He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to reduce drug trafficking and abuse to the bare minimum and called for the cooperation of relevant stakeholders.

    “Now that normalcy is gradually returning to the state, we hope to resume our activities at full capacity to ensure that Imo is not a safe haven for illicit drug activities.

    ” We will shine our spotlight on the drug dealers. patented so that they do not remain active channels for the sale of illicit substances.
