Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stepped up efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure, as its leadership engaged the Nigeria Police Force in high-level discussions on strengthening security across the sector.
During a strategic visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Chairman of the NCC Board, Idris Olorunnimbe, alongside the Commission’s Executive Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, emphasised the urgent need for deeper inter-agency collaboration.
The meeting, held at Louis Edet House, focused on protecting critical telecom facilities amid rising cases of vandalism, sabotage, and other threats disrupting essential communication services.
A key highlight of the discussions was the implementation of the Presidential Order designating telecommunications infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII). The policy is aimed at strengthening the protection of Nigeria’s digital and communication systems against attacks and operational disruptions.
Olorunnimbe noted that the CNII designation provides a more robust legal and operational framework to tackle offences such as fibre optic cuts, damage to base stations, and unauthorised access to network systems.
Echoing this position, Maida stressed the need for improved intelligence sharing, faster emergency response, and stronger coordination between the NCC and law enforcement agencies to ensure uninterrupted connectivity for citizens and businesses.
In response, Disu assured the Commission of the police force’s full support, pledging stronger enforcement of existing laws and proactive measures to curb criminal activities targeting telecom infrastructure.
Both parties also explored enhanced collaboration in leveraging telecommunications technology for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and emergency response nationwide.
The visit underscores the NCC’s renewed commitment to fostering stronger partnerships with law enforcement agencies to protect Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and reinforce national security.
