“Michael,” a biographical film based on the life of late pop icon Michael Jackson, has debuted at the top of the North American box office with an estimated 97 million dollars in opening weekend earnings.

Michael Jackson Biopic
The film, directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, follows Jackson’s rise from child performer to global music superstar.
Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays the lead role in the production.
Industry analysts described the opening as a record-setting debut for a musical biographical film.
The film has also performed strongly in international markets, generating nearly 220 million dollars globally following releases across Europe and North America.
Despite strong audience turnout and positive reactions to its nostalgic storytelling, critical reviews have been mixed.
Some critics argued that the film presented a largely celebratory account of Jackson’s life while avoiding more controversial and complex aspects of his legacy.
Reports indicated that a second instalment of the biopic is already in development.
Meanwhile, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” placed second at the North American box office, earning 21.2 million dollars over the weekend.
Amazon MGM Studios’ “Project Hail Mary” ranked third with 13.2 million dollars, continuing its box office momentum.
In fourth place was Warner Bros.’ “The Mummy,” which grossed 5.6 million dollars.
Rounding out the top five was A24’s “The Drama,” starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, with weekend earnings of 2.6 million dollars.
The film’s worldwide gross has reportedly reached 80 million dollars.
