Lagos Govt Shifts $3bn Marina-Lekki Rail Project to December 2025

Lagos State Government has announced a postponement in the commencement of construction for its $3 billion Green Line rail project, now scheduled to begin in December 2025.

The update was disclosed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement released via the state government’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday.

Osiyemi had earlier indicated in April that the ambitious infrastructure project would kick off before the end of 2024. However, he cited logistical adjustments and planning refinements as reasons for the revised timeline.

The Green Line, when completed, will span 70 kilometres, linking Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone. It will traverse key urban corridors including Victoria Island, Ajah, Sangotedo, and the Lekki axis, and is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve mobility across Lagos.

According to the Commissioner, the rail line will feature 17 stations along a mix of elevated and ground-level tracks and will be executed in phases over a two- to three-year period.

“The first phase of construction will cover the stretch from Lekki First Tollgate to Epe,” Osiyemi said. “The second phase will begin at Marina and include an on-water segment, which presents unique engineering opportunities.”

The Green Line is part of the state’s broader Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) initiative aimed at modernizing public transportation and supporting economic growth through improved connectivity.
