High Costs Force Anambra to Suspend Awka Solar Street Light Project – Ravenewsonline

Soludo appoints Osun, Abia indigenes as permanent secretaries

Anambra State Government has suspended the installation of solar-powered street lights in the Awka metropolis, a project that was set to cost the state over N1 billion.

The decision was made during the 35th Anambra State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House in Awka.

During last week’s meeting, three companies were listed as having been awarded the contract, which was expected to be completed within three months.

However, after extensive discussions, the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, revealed that the council found the unit cost of the project to be too high and decided that it needed to be revised.

“The council extensively debated the memo for the installation of the solar-powered street lights and resolved that the unit cost was too high and required a downward review,” Mefor stated.

It was further disclosed that the memo would be rescheduled for re-presentation at the next Executive Council meeting, where all the specifications for the project will be made available. “This move is a prudent decision to ensure the project’s execution at a reasonable cost,” the council emphasized.

Additionally, the Executive Council clarified that the previous announcement stating that the street light project had been awarded was a mistake. “The government regrets the mistake. The public will be updated on the project’s status once a decision is made,” the statement concluded.
