Gunmen Kill Councillor During Anambra Governorship Election – Soludo

Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra has confirmed the killing of a councillor by gunmen during the just-concluded governorship election in the state.

Soludo made the disclosure on Sunday in Awka shortly after being declared winner of the poll conducted on Saturday.

The governor said the deceased, a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), was shot dead in Owerre Ezukala Ward 1, Orumba South Local Government Area, while attempting to cast his vote.

“I also note with sadness the sad news that some hoodlums went to a community. We understand they came from across the border, caused mayhem and even killed one of our supporters, a councillor who had just voted and was heading home,” Soludo said.

“They accosted him and shot him dead. That’s a councillor and an APGA chieftain. It’s very unfortunate. May his soul rest in peace,” he added.

Soludo commended security agencies for their efforts in maintaining peace and order during the election, noting that their swift response helped to thwart attempts to disrupt the process.

The Anambra State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
