The Center For Liberty called on the National Assembly to demonstrate its true commitment by adopting the new electoral law which guarantees the electronic transmission of election results.
The group, in a statement by its co-organizer, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, in Abuja on Sunday, said passing such a bill would restore people’s confidence in Nigerian democracy.
He said the passage would also help ease tensions in different parts of the country.
“The National Assembly must demonstrate that it is truly committed to the peace and stability of Nigeria by allowing a path of hope with the adoption of a new electoral law which guarantees the electronic transmission of results and transparency” , did he declare.
Atoye said the National Assembly must urgently consider endowing the country with certain legislation, such as the electoral law of 2021, to restore people’s confidence in this democracy, especially when unrest in various shades was mounting in the country. the country.
He added that the National Assembly must do more with the passage of the electoral bill to assure Nigerians of its commitment to a credible power transition in response to rumors gradually circulating “of a third term. “.
As the nation’s mood is tense and palpable, the leadership of the National Assembly must be sensitive and come to a critical understanding that giving the people a sense of hope for free, fair and credible elections will help strengthen the position of those who work for a Nigeria.
Atoye urged the National Assembly leadership to urgently remove any obstacles to the passage of the bill by immediately sending it to third reading for immediate passage by lawmakers.
“Every day that passes without the adoption of the electoral law diminishes the National Assembly by inadvertently reinforcing the attempt of the agitators of secession, creating distrust of the system and making it difficult for many Nigerians to believe in the country.
“Equally important is telling the 9th National Assembly that Nigerians will not agree to a new electoral law that does not expressly provide for the electronic transmission of results.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured the population of its willingness to do electronic transmission and has demonstrated the same thing in the last three out-of-cycle elections.
“We therefore urge the Speaker of the Senate, Senator Ahmad Lawan, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, to remove the obstacles and immediately cause the transmission of the final document on the electoral bill to the plenary for the third reading and adoption of the bill, ”he declared.
