Google LLC, an American multinational technology company that specializes in Internet-related services and products, has informed her Nigerian customers via email that “due to new legislation in Nigeria, starting April 1, 2022, Google will be required to charge 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) on all taxable goods and services.

The email informed the customers that “no action is required on their side with regard to their Google business account.”

They list notable changes to Nigerian customer’s Google business accounts as follow:

    • The amount of VAT charged on your purchases will appear as a separate line in your account
    • Your invoice or statement will show the amount of VAT charged

Google further explained that they “cannot advise you (customers) on tax matters, so please contact your tax adviser for any questions regarding this change.”

Recall that on January 1, 2022, Meta Platforms, Inc., (formerly known as Facebook, Inc) started charging her Nigerian advertisers 7.5% VAT on ad spending. Google is expected to start the same from April 1, 2022.
