Fuel Crisis: Samia Suluhu Hassan Cuts Convoy, Orders Officials Into One Bus

Tanzania’s President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has announced a significant reduction in the size of her official convoy and directed government officials to begin travelling together in a single bus during official engagements, as part of efforts to cut fuel consumption.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, April 8, during a swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed officials. Hassan said the decision became necessary in light of rising fuel pressures linked to global supply disruptions, reports Gwg.com.

According to her, only essential vehicles will now accompany her during official movements, including her security escort, police detail, and a backup vehicle, while the usual large entourage will no longer be allowed.

Her presidential convoy has traditionally included more than 30 vehicles, ranging from luxury SUVs to police outriders.A formation often criticised for causing heavy traffic disruptions in major cities.

“From now on, wherever I go, all officials will travel together in one bus… to cut fuel consumption,” Hassan was quoted as saying.

The move comes as several countries grapple with fuel supply challenges following disruptions in global oil routes, including tensions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas is transported. Some nations have already begun introducing fuel rationing measures in response to the situation.
