Fenerbahçe duo Mason Greenwood and Matteo Guendouzi have been handed UEFA sanctions for their involvement in the chaotic scenes that followed their club’s Champions League play-off second-leg victory over Lyon.
Fenerbahçe won 2–1 in France last month to secure a 3–2 aggregate victory and book their place in the next round. However, the match ended in ugly scenes, with Greenwood and Guendouzi, both former players of Lyon’s fierce rivals Marseille, involved in a confrontation with players and members of the coaching staff from both teams.
Guendouzi, the former Arsenal midfielder, has been suspended for a total of four UEFA club competition matches. UEFA said the punishment was imposed for insulting people present at the match, provoking spectators and breaching its basic rules of decent conduct.
Two of the four matches are subject to a one-year probationary period. Guendouzi was also fined €50,000 after being found to have made an offensive gesture towards Lyon supporters and engaged in provocations that contributed to the post-match scuffle.
Greenwood, who previously played for Manchester United, received a one-match suspended ban and was fined €30,000 for violating UEFA’s basic rules of decent conduct.
The disciplinary decisions were announced by UEFA on Friday evening.
