The Federal Executive Council, FEC, has approved a new salary structure for officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force, NPF.
Police Affairs Minister Maigari Dingyadi made this fact known to House correspondents at the end of the Council meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to him, the highlight of the increase is the provision of a peculiar subsidy of 20 percent for the police.
He said: “I am particularly very happy today to inform Nigerians that the Federal Executive Council has approved the review and update of the net salary of police personnel in this country.
“You recall that in October 2020 this country shook with the protests for the End of SARS and the president addressed the nation asking for calm, after which he promised that the police salary will be reviewed in recognition of the services that he will receive. have been providing the country – keep the peace and quiet.
“So, FEC today approved a proposal for the revision of their salaries, which will take effect from January 2022.
“We have tried to create a situation where your take-home pay is improved by improving things like your tour of duty allowance, which has been revised to six percent of your new take-home pay,” he said.
The minister also revealed that the Council approved N1.1 billion for the payment of uninsured benefits pending from the police.
“The City Council also approved the payment of N1,120, 172,150.00 as outstanding staff benefits for the uninsured period of 2013-2020.
“It also approved N127,972,269.20 for payment as outstanding death benefits of 5,472 employees for the uninsured period from 2013 to August 2021, not covered by group life insurance.
“The council also approved N1.2 billion as outstanding staff burial expenses for the period of January 2012-2021,” he said.
According to the minister, the Council also approved annual insurance premiums of N750 million, as well as the payment of N4,812,500,000 for repairs and replacement of damaged police infrastructure in future budgets, starting in 2022.
He said the Council also approved a tax exemption in the amount of N18.6 billion for junior Police officers in order to increase their take-home pay from October 2021.
“Similarly, the government has approved an increase in the current rent subsidy, which is currently between 15 and 20 percent, amounting to 61 billion naira.
“With the increase, it is now 40 percent of the Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), in the sum of N78.3 billion.
“It also approved the payment of an additional six percent shift allowance for officers at grade levels 01-14 and supervisor assignments for officers at grade level 15 and above, totaling approximately N10,038. billion as of 2022.
“Most importantly, the government also approved the 20 percent CONPOSS payment as a peculiar allowance to boost morale and take-home pay for Nigerian Police personnel,” he said.
The minister stated that the Federation Auditor General had been ordered to verify the staffing and claims approved by the Council, after which a clean salary structure would be calculated and introduced by the Wages and Salaries Commission, which would be adopted. as soon as possible. .
He said that with the new development, the government would expect the police to redouble their efforts to justify the trust placed in them.
The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr. Zainab Ahmed, who answered questions about the salary increase, revealed that the increase was not recorded in the 2022 budget.
However, he affirmed that after the calculations and approval, a supplementary budget would be sent to the National Assembly for this purpose, to pave the way for the payment of the arrears and the full implementation of the new salary.
