ECOWAS Court finds Nigerian Government guilty of human rights abuses during #EndSARS protests

    ECOWAS

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice has found the Nigerian government guilty of human rights abuses in its handling of the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

In a ruling on Wednesday, July 10, the court determined that the Nigerian government’s actions, particularly the excessive use of force at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, violated multiple international human rights standards.

These violations include breaches of articles 1, 5, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The court has ordered the Nigerian government to pay N2 million in compensation to each victim named in the suit.
