A Dutch court in Zwolle has annulled a couple’s marriage after discovering their wedding vows were generated by ChatGPT, failing to include the mandatory legal declaration binding spouses to their duties.

The couple appointed a friend as a “eendagsbab” (registrar for a day), who used the AI tool to craft vows with a lighter tone, omitting the required phrase affirming commitment “as required by their wedded state,” rendering the April 19 ceremony void.
Local council officials later flagged the omission to prosecutors, who sought judicial invalidation despite the couple’s protests that an official registrar attended without objection and their plea to retain the sentimental date.
The judge upheld the law’s requirements, stating understanding for the couple’s attachment to the recorded date but refusing to override legal standards.
