The National Sports Commission has confirmed that each player of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has received the naira equivalent of $100,000 as part of the Presidential Reward for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s Afrobasket.
Each team official also received the naira equivalent of $50,000.
According to the NSC, the accounts of the players and officials were credited on September 9, 2026, with all beneficiaries confirming receipt of the payments.
D’Tigress secured a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title and their seventh championship overall in 2025.
The commission said the payments completed all aspects of the rewards promised to the team by President Bola Tinubu.
In a statement signed by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Kehinde Ajayi, the NSC said the Presidential Reward package included three-bedroom apartments in Abuja, national honours of the Order of the Niger (OON), and cash payments of $100,000 for each player and $50,000 for each official.
The players and officials had previously received title documents for their Abuja apartments and certificates of national honours in February 2026 during the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in Lyon, France. The documents were signed by President Tinubu.
The NSC said the cash component was paid following the team’s participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Germany.
The commission also provided an update on the Presidential Rewards promised to the Super Falcons. It said members of the women’s football team had received title documents for their three-bedroom apartments in Abuja and certificates of national honours during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco in July and August 2026.
The cash component of the Falcons’ reward is expected to be paid before their next official engagements. Each player is due the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official is to receive $50,000.
The NSC said the rewards formed part of the Federal Government’s efforts to prioritise the welfare and recognition of Nigerian athletes.
It commended President Tinubu for his support for Nigerian sports, saying his policies had strengthened the commission’s reform efforts and its drive to develop a sustainable sports economy.
The commission also thanked key government officials and agencies, including the Ministry of Finance, the Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, for their role in implementing the rewards.
