A businessman, Ajah Johnson Uchenna, and his wife, Rosemary Uchenna, have been sentenced to a total of 22 and a half years imprisonment by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos for trafficking in illicit drugs.
Justice Deinde Dipeolu delivered the judgment on Monday, convicting the couple on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, dealing, and unlawful storage of 414.2kg of cannabis sativa.
The couple was arrested on June 13 by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the Ojo area of Lagos and handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along with 277.5kg of skunk, a strain of cannabis.
While in custody, further intelligence led NDLEA operatives to raid their residence and a packing store on July 1, where an additional 231kg of the same substance was recovered.
They were subsequently arraigned in charge number FHC/L/632C/2025.
Justice Dipeolu sentenced Mrs. Rosemary Uchenna to 17 years imprisonment without an option of fine on counts one to three. Her husband, Johnson Ajah Uchenna, was sentenced to five years imprisonment on count one and six months on count four, with an option of ₦1 million fine.
The court also ordered the forfeiture of ₦3,407,000 recovered from the couple to the Federal Government as proceeds of crime.
NDLEA spokesperson, Mr. Femi Babafemi, confirmed the conviction in a statement issued on Monday.
