Telecoms operator, 9mobile, has changed its name to T2, marking a fresh chapter in its journey under new ownership.
The unveiling ceremony, which held on Friday at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos, came one year after LH Telecommunication Limited acquired a 95.5 per cent stake in the company.
This is the second time the firm is undergoing a name change. It first rebranded from Etisalat to 9mobile in 2017 following a corporate shake-up.
Speaking at the event, Chief Executive Officer of Emerging Markets Telecommunication Services Limited, Femi Banigbe, described the rebrand as a bold move aimed at repositioning the company for growth.
“This is not just a brand unveiling. It is the beginning of a bold new chapter in our history,” Banigbe said.
He explained that the transformation goes beyond a new logo or tagline, stressing that it reflects a renewed mission to serve customers better.
Banigbe said the company was responding to the changing demands of Nigerians who now seek speed, access, and relevance in their digital lives.
“We see it in the rising tide of the youth, in the boldness of our startup ecosystem, and in the resilience of our SMEs,” he added.
He noted that staying relevant in today’s market requires radical but practical evolution, while remaining proudly Nigerian.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, commended mobile network operators for their role in Nigeria’s digital transformation.
He said mobile lines had grown from under one million in 2001 to over 220 million today, with broadband penetration nearing 50 per cent.
“The MNOs have invested boldly, spending more than ₦75bn in towers, fibre, and 5G—all without government subsidy,” Tijani said.
He described the T2 rebrand as a sign of readiness to compete and innovate, urging the company to back its new identity with improved service delivery.
“Let this rebrand be more than a change of colours. Let it be a renewed commitment to innovation and excellence,” he said.
Tijani assured that the Federal Government would continue to support operators like T2 who are willing to invest and adapt to change.
