Argentina won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Sunday, with captain Lionel Messi fulfilling his long-time dream of winning the coveted trophy.

The 2022 tournament was believed to be Messi’s last World Cup so there were high hopes of success in his last dance at the biggest football tournament.

The South American country beat France through penalties in the final of the competition to win its third World Cup trophy.

Argentina scored first from the penalty spot through Messi and soon got a second through Angel Di Maria. But in the second half, France hit back scoring two goals through Mbappe. In extra time, Argentina got their third goal through Messi but France responded again, equalising from the penalty spot.

Messi scored two goals while the tournament’s highest goal scorer, Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick.

Argentina won the coveted trophy in 1978 and 1986 but lost in the finals in 1930, 1990, and 2014. France won the trophy in 1998 and 2018 but lost in the 2006 final to Italy.

Finally, Messi was able to put behind him the disappointment of the 2014 final defeat to Germany, scoring two goals in the match and cementing his status as one of the greatest-ever players to grace the game of football.
