Anambra Vigilante Commander who Tortured Female Police Officer Arrested

Anambra Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng says the command has arrested a Commander of the Anambra Surveillance Group, AVG, for the alleged torture of a female police officer.

The commander, whose name was not released, is said to have arrested and tortured the officer at the AVG office in Awuda Nnobi in Idemili South Local Government Area on January 12.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, a police public relations officer in the state who revealed this in a statement on Saturday, said the watch commander was now in police custody.

According to Mr. Ikenga, following a video trending on social media showing some AVG members harassing and torturing a female police officer in her office, the police commissioner ordered the immediate arrest of the commander and investigation of the incident. .

“The police called the act cowardly and said that the command is always ready to protect women against violence, even if the person is not part of the security community,” he said.

Ekenga thanked the public, especially residents of the state, for condemning the act.

He said the command would not tolerate human rights abuses of any kind under his watch.
