A 69-year-old American tourist has died after falling from the 29th floor of a boutique hotel in Hong Kong, with seven other persons sustaining injuries in the incident.
Local media reports said the incident occurred on Monday at the Hotel Indigo Hong Kong Island, located in the Wan Chai commercial district.
According to reports, the woman fell from the hotel’s pool deck shortly after 9 a.m. local time.
Authorities said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The impact of the fall reportedly injured a 74-year-old resident who was struck during the incident.
She was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit for treatment.
The force of the impact also shattered glass panels at the hotel entrance, causing injuries to six additional persons nearby.
Those injured included the 74-year-old woman’s 77-year-old sister, two women aged 40 and 41, their children aged 10 and eight respectively, as well as an 89-year-old American woman.
Police sources quoted by local media said the deceased had reportedly been battling depression and had stopped taking prescribed medication in March.
Her husband was said to have left the hotel for a medical appointment about an hour before the incident occurred.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
