Aloy Ejimakor Condemns Protesters Who Blocked Peter Obi’s Benue Visit

Human rights lawyer Aloy Ejimakor has condemned youths who reportedly barricaded a major road in Makurdi, Benue State, in an attempt to prevent the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, from proceeding with his scheduled visit.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 8, after suspected thugs reportedly blocked an access road near Gyado Villa along Gboko Road, Makurdi, following Obi’s arrival in the state.

The blockade prevented Obi’s convoy from proceeding to locations where he was expected to carry out scheduled engagements.

Reacting to the incident in a statement posted on his official X account, Ejimakor questioned why those who blocked Obi’s movement had not similarly confronted armed groups accused of carrying out deadly attacks across the state.

He also alleged that Obi was targeted because of his Igbo background and drew a comparison with political tensions surrounding Nigeria’s history.

“These Benue protesters and thugs that barricaded and stopped Peter Obi from entering Benue, let me ask you: When will you barricade the terrorists that have been killing thousands in your state? Or is it only when it comes to the Igbo? This is how you messed yourselves up in the Civil War,” Ejimakor wrote.

The incident has sparked reactions online, with discussions centring on political tolerance, ethnic sentiments and the safety of political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
