MTN Nigeria hosted its 2020 set of graduating scholars to an employability workshop on November 11, 2020.
The workshop had facilitators from Google, Oracle and Cisco including a Jobberman representative, Precious Ajoonu.
The scholars were exposed to insightful information on how to use data analytics to improve businesses, the basics of entrepreneurship and cybersecurity, and the steps needed to create impactful applications using Oracle APEX. Furthermore, scholars received tips on how to search for jobs effectively.
Kenneth Awom, a Google certified trainer, while speaking on the process of analytics highlighted questions that would aid the process.
He said, “In creating a process for analytics, the following questions can help; what is my objective? What questions do I need to address? Where do I get the information and what do I do with the information I get?”
He stated that the fastest ways to drive sales for a business is by using data derived from analytics to identify valuable customers and find new ways to retain the ones you already have through their behavioral pattern.
Austine Ijeoma of Cisco, on the other hand, spoke on the importance of value creation in entrepreneurship.
He further explained how entrepreneurs can set Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART) goals for their businesses.
On cybersecurity, Sati Satmer Dapel of Cisco said, “Cybersecurity is very important because we are in a world of digitalization.
“A lot of information is exchanged online hence, it is important to know how secure your business platform is.” Mutiu Salami and Salim Hlayel also spoke on using Oracle low-code application development platforms like APEX to create data-driven applications that solve real-world problems.
During her session, Head, Youth Engagement, and Learning, Jobberman Nigeria, Precious Ajoonu shared tips on writing attractive and compelling CVs and cover letters.
She also offered information on the dos and don’ts of job hunting.
“In your job search process, ensure you narrow your focus considering areas such as your career goal, your network, job search platforms, among others.”
She added that while searching for jobs, it is not enough to just ‘cast the net widely’; job seekers need to be strategic about their choices.
The MTN scholarship is an annual scholarship award that recognizes and rewards high performing students in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
It is made up of the MTN Science and Technology Scholarship Scheme and the MTN Scheme for Blind Students.
Upon completion of a university degree, graduate scholars are equipped with the skills required to build a thriving career through the employability workshop.
