Akpabio Essien Emerges New President of Waste Management Society

Akpabio Essien has emerged President of the Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON) as the body elected new executives now Friday in PortHarcourt.

The election of new executives formed part of the third International Waste Management Summit/Annual General Meeting (AGM) organized by the body.

The new WAMASON boss thanked members for giving him the opportunity to serve, especially after having served in other capacities within the union.

He promised to bring to bear his wealth of experience with a view to moving the body to a greater height.

Other new executives are Prof. Austin Abere (First Vice President), Mr Ahmed Hamid (Second Vice President), Mr Yakubu Waziri (Secretary), Mr Abu Benson (PRO) among others.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a communique after the summit gave the following recommendations.

“Due to inherent challenges in the waste management sector, the following recommendations are therefore necessary to help reduce ecological depletion and create a sustainable ecosystem.

1.Individuals should be properly encouraged on protecting the Earth from eminent devastation as a result of poor waste management practices through awareness campaigns by the government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

2.Enforcement of rules, laws, policies and regulations guiding waste management in the country should be reassessed.

Gas flaring must be stopped as quickly as possible so as to increase crop yield and also reduce emission of metal surfaces.(NAN)
