Court Sends Sowore to Kuje Prison After Revoking Bail in Cybercrime Trial

    Omoyele Sowore

Justice Mohammed Umar issued the order on Monday after dismissing an application by Sowore seeking the judge’s recusal from the case over allegations of bias.

Sowore is currently facing trial on cybercrime charges instituted by the Department of State Services (DSS) over a social media post in which he allegedly described President Bola Tinubu as a criminal.

In a brief ruling, Justice Umar directed that the defendant be remanded in custody pending the hearing and determination of his application seeking a stay of execution of the order revoking his bail and the bench warrant issued against him.

The court subsequently adjourned the matter until June 24 for hearing of the application.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court had, last week, revoked Sowore’s bail after finding that he failed to appear for his trial as required.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, has maintained his innocence in the charges brought against him.

The case has continued to attract public attention due to Sowore’s activism and involvement in national political discourse.
