Nigeria Ranks 4th Most Terrorised Country Globally, Ahead of Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan

Nigeria has been ranked the fourth most terror‑affected country in the world in 2025, ahead of Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the latest Global Terrorism Index (GTI) released by the Institute for Economics and Peace.

The report shows that terrorism‑related deaths in Nigeria surged by about 43–46 percent in 2025, with roughly 750 fatalities recorded and 171 attacks reported, up from 120 in 2024.

Most of the violence continues to be concentrated in the northeast, especially Borno State, where groups such as Boko Haram and ISWAP account for the bulk of attacks and deaths.

Rating Pakistan, Burkina Faso, and Niger above Nigeria, the GTI now places the country among the world’s most terror‑impacted nations, triggering criticism from opposition parties who blame the Tinubu administration for worsening insecurity and calls for stronger local‑level counter‑terrorism measures.
