Senate Suspends Debate on Electoral Bill 2025 for Further Consultations

The Senate on Thursday suspended debate on the Electoral Bill 2025 to allow for broader consultations and deeper deliberations on its provisions.

Ravenewsonline reports that the decision followed the presentation of the bill’s general principles by Sen. Simon Lalong (Plateau South), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, during plenary.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who presided over the session, said the presentation lacked sufficient detail and proposed an executive session to enable lawmakers to review the bill more comprehensively.

However, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central) opposed holding the session on the same day, describing it as “too auspicious” for such a discussion. He instead moved that the bill be stepped down and rescheduled for another legislative day.

Akpabio subsequently put the motion to a voice vote, and it was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.

The Electoral Bill 2025 seeks to amend key provisions of the existing electoral framework ahead of the next general elections.
