    45% of human traffickers are females – NAPTIP reveals

    A 31-year-old woman, Joy Shipinen Tyona, has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment for human trafficking.

    Tyona, from Benue State, was arraigned by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on July 2, 2024, and convicted the same day for conspiracy to commit an offence of human trafficking for sexual exploitation.

    The agency disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, adding that 45% of human traffickers are female.

    “On July 2nd 2024, Joy Shipinen Tyona, a 31-year-old woman plead guilty to a three counts charge for organizing and facilitating illegal foreign travel for sexual exploitation,” the statement read.

    “She was convicted on all counts and sentenced to 7 years Imprisonment with no option of fine

    “45% of human traffickers are females, dispelling the myth that it is a male-dominated crime. Justice is served.”
